The constituency of Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh will be among the 51 constituencies in the country to conduct polling today. UPA Chairperson and sitting MP Sonia Gandhi will be pitted against BJP candidate and former Congress leader Dinesh Pratap Singh.
Rae Bareli has traditionally been a Congress bastion, and has been represented by the party sixteen times, out of the total nineteen general elections that have been held there. It has been represented by Gandhi’s mother-in-law and former Prime Minister late Indira Gandhi for three terms. Sonia Gandhi won the constituency four times.
The former Congress President won the seat by a margin of 3.5 lakh votes against BJP candidate and Supreme Court advocate Ajay Agrawal in 2014.
Singh, who is the BJP candidate this time, was a Congress member, and close aide of the Gandhis, who left the party alleging that it is a “private limited company of the Gandhis, which serves the interests of only one family”. Singh joined the BJP last year.
The ‘mahagathbandhan’ of the SP-BSP, despite not forming an alliance with the Congress, has not fielded any candidate from Rae Bareli, in a show of support for the grand old party.
Voter turnout by 10:00am was recorded at around 9.7%.
