The constituency of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh will be among the 51 constituencies in the country to conduct polling today. BJP leader and Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani will be pitted against Congress President and sitting MP Rahul Gandhi.
Amethi has traditionally been a Congress bastion, and has been represented by the party eleven times, out of the total thirteen general elections that have been held there. Three members of Gandhi’s family have held the seat before him- his father and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, his uncle Sanjay Gandhi, and his mother Sonia Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi himself has held the seat since 2004.
Irani was the BJP candidate in 2014 too, and lost by a margin of one lakh votes, the lowest for Rahul in his three terms. Both the parties have conducted many rallies in the constituency, the star campaigners, apart from the candidates, being Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party national President Amit Shah from the BJP, and Uttar Pradesh East General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi from the Congress, as it is a fight the whole country is looking forwarded to.
Gandhi is also fighting, for the first time, from the Wayanad constituency in Kerala, where elections were held in the third phase on April 23. The ‘mahagathbandhan’ of the SP-BSP, despite not forming an alliance with the Congress, has not fielded any candidate from Amethi, in a show of support for the grand old party,
The voter turnout by 9:30am was recorded at about 8.15%.
