Bollywood actor Sunny Deol, who has been fielded as the BJP candidate from the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha constituency of Punjab, spoke to the media for the first time since the announcement of him contesting the polls, and laid down his agenda.
When asked to respond to sitting MP and Congress leader Sunil Jakhar’s accusation that Deol has no experience in the state and no understanding of their issues, Deol replied that he “belongs to the people here”, and would always “try to meet up to their expectations”.
The former actor attempted to pacify people’s fears that he would not stay and work in Punjab after elections and would return to Mumbai, by saying, “I have not come here to return”.
Deol emphasised on the importance of creating job opportunities for the youth, who are the “foundation” of the society. He also added that “farming is in the blood”, of the people of the state, and that he wants to understand all their issues and “do whatever is possible for their welfare”.
The Gurdaspur constituency is currently held by Congress leader Sunil Jakhar, who won the seat in by-polls held in 2017, after the death of then MP and former actor Vinod Khanna. Deol will face Jakhar in the polls on May 19, in the last phase of the ongoing 17th Lok Sabha elections. Counting of votes will take place on May 23.
