Actor-turned-politician Shatrughan Sinha’s wife, Poonam Sinha, has announced that she will join the political arena by contesting from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, under a Samajwadi Party ticket.
Shatrughan Sinha, who is contesting from the Patna Sahib seat, belongs to the BJP, and had claimed earlier in March that his wife “did a lot of social work and was liked by all”, but had never explicitly states whether she would be joining active politics. His occasional meetings with SP president Akhilesh Yadav, once at the latter’s Lucknow office, had given rise to speculations that Poonam Sinha might join the party and be fielded from the constituency.
Poonam will face Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who is the sitting MP from the seat, from the BJP. SP, which is in alliance with the BSP and RLD, has appealed to the Congress to not field any candidate from Lucknow, expecting a return of favour as the SP-BSP-RLD alliance did not field anyone from Amethi and Rae Bareli, which are the strongholds of Congress President Rahul Gandhi and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, respectively.
Sinha, when asked about facing Singh, said that it does not matter, and that she will “fight strongly”. Singh was reported as saying that he will “fight with full dignity”.
Sinha will file the nomination papers on April 18. Singh filed his papers on Tuesday, after holding a huge roadshow in the area. The constituency will go to polling on May 6, in the 5th phase of the 17th General Elections.
