Congress in-charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh, the state with the maximum number of Lok Sabha seats, and Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, had herself jokingly said at a rally a few days ago that she might contest elections from the constituency of Varanasi in UP, when urged by a worker to actively participate in the 17th General elections.
Though it is not clear whether Gandhi made the statement just to respond to the workers’ pleas, or whether it was a hint at her future plans, it gave rise to intense speculations that the new entrant to the arena might take up the fight against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Modi contested from the seat for the first time in 2014, securing 56.37% votes, defeating AAP founder Arvind Kejriwal and Congress candidate, local Varanasi strongman, Ajay Rai. The Prime Minister is due to hold a roadshow, following by filing the nomination papers for the constituency on April 26.
Gandhi’s husband, Robert Vadra, while speaking to reporters, said that his wife “is ready to fight from Varanasi”, and that she is a hardworking person, and “people see her as an agent of change”. Though there has been no official confirmation from either Gandhi or the party, Vadra’s statements have placed media and the internet in a frenzy, labelling the Varanasi polls the biggest and most interesting this year.
Priyanka had, at a recent rally in Assam, criticised the PM for not paying enough attention to his constituency Varanasi, and not fulfilling his duty to the people. Polling will be held in Varanasi in the last phase on May 19, and the last day for filing the nominations is April 30.
