Thursday noon saw a powerful grenade blast at a Jammu bus stand, with around 30 people injured and three to four people critically injured. One of the victims succumbed to his injuries, a resident of Haridwar, Uttarakhand, 17-year-old Mohammad Sharik.
A witness was reported as describing the explosion by the grenade which was placed under a bus, and said that the impact of the explosion was so “powerful that the windscreens of three to four buses were also smashed”. The witnesses did not rush to the spot immediately in fear of a second explosion as a “strange noise was coming from the bus on which the grenade was planted”. After waiting for a while, they went to the rescue of the victims, as there were no police personnel at that time.
The bus stand vicinity seems to be a favourite of terrorists, as there have been two grenade attacks here previously in the last ten months. Police officers say this might be as the bus stand is busy, with many people around at all times.
17-year-old Yasir Bhatt, a local resident of Kashmir has been arrested for the attack. As per J&K DGP Dilbagh Singh, the arrested was tasked to throw the grenade by District Commissioner of Hizbul Mujahideen in Kulgam, Farooq Ahmed Bhatt. The accused has confessed to the crime.
