Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at a rally in Haryana, promised to send Robert Vadra to jail within the next five years if the BJP returns to power. Not naming him directly, Modi referred to Vadra as “Shahenshah”, and said that Vadra is nervous, as he has been “making rounds of the Enforcement Directorate and court to take bail”, and has been shown the jail door already.
Robert Vadra, husband of Congress General Secretary of eastern Uttar Pradesh, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and brother-in-law of Congress President Rahul Gandhi, has been suspected of being involved in land deals in Gurgaon, and illegally benefitting from them. The then BJP government of Haryana, led by Bhupinder Singh Hooda, had set up the Justice Dhingra Commission of Inquiry for further investigation. The Commission’s 182-page report was not made public after the Punjab and Haryana High Court ordered a stay.
Along with this, Vadra is currently accused of money laundering in the purchase of a London-based property, allegedly owned by Vadra, at 12, Bryanston Square, costing around 1.9 million pounds.
Recently, the Delhi High Court has granted more time to the ED to file an affidavit regarding the maintainability of Vadra’s plea seeking quashing of the case. The matter has been scheduled for further hearing on July 18. Vadra and his close aide, Manoj Arora, have been ordered to file their rejoinder to the aforementioned affidavit filed by the ED, two weeks later.
