Prime Minister Narendra Modi is due to visit the parliamentary constituency of his nemesis, Rahul Gandhi tomorrow.
This will be the PM’s first visit to the state with the largest number of seats, the largest vote-bank in the general elections, since December 2018.
Amethi in Uttar Pradesh has been a strong-hold of the Indian National Congress, with four generations of the Gandhi party having won seats there.
Modi will address a public meeting in Kauhar area of Gauriganj and will launch some projects besides laying the foundation stone of a new unit of the Munshiganj Ordnance Factory, where assault rifles will be made in collaboration with Russia. Modi also plans to launch several schemes in the city.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has been personally overseeing preparations since the last week for the PM’s visit. The whole city has been decorated with saffron colors and flags to welcome Modi.
This will be Modi’s first visit to the loyal Gandhi bastion in 5 years. In the last visit in 2015, Modi had presented Smriti Irani as the BJP candidate in the constituency, who went on to lose against Rahul Gandhi by one lakh votes. It is expected that Smriti Irani will be the candidate again this year, considering her frequent visits to the city since her 2014 defeat. Congress, on the other hand, has failed to field their candidate in Amethi yet, despite their recent tour in the state. However, President of the Congress, Rahul Gandhi, having won thrice consecutively, seems to be the probable candidate.
What remains to be seen now is whether Narendra Modi, with his brave words and promises can woo Amethi, whose citizens have worshipped and followed the Gandhi family for decades.
