Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, in a tweet yesterday, explained the correlation between the Fundamental Right of Speech and Expression, and the Model Code of Conduct which is in force since the day the Election Commission announced the election schedule, on March 10.
Jaitley said that a “tendency has developed amongst the political parties” to allege that the MCC has been violated by their opponents. He also labelled the Congress party as the “cry baby” among the parties, and leading the pack.
He further launched an attack on the Congress for possessing the right of “restrictive free speech”, where they can “call an honest PM a chor”, but no one else can.
Jaitley, a former Supreme Court advocate and Minister of Law and Justice in the Atal Behari Vajpayee government, went on to explain that the “sacrosanct Right of Free Speech is not suspended or diluted during elections, and instead, has to be fully protected during this period”.
“In recent cases, where the PM appealed to the first time voters, no party or candidate was mentioned. In another case, he made a reference to the demographic composition of the new constituency of Congress President. How these speeches are even considered violative of the MCC?”, Jaitley tweeted.
