Irani questions Vadra’s nationalism for not condemning Chacko

Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani, speaking to reporters, said that she was “happy” that Congress in-charge of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, was counting the number of times Irani visited the constituency of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh. The former television actress is pitted against Vadra’s brother and Congress President Rahul Gandhi, and had lost by a margin of one lakh votes from Modi in the previous elections in 2014.
Irani further said that Vadra was probably doing this as she was unable to tell the people where the “missing MP was for 15 years”, referring to Gandhi’s 15-year long stint in the constituency.
Referring to Congress leader and former MP, PC Chacko’s statements lauding Yasin Malik for his “courage” against the Modi government, Irani questioned Vadra for preaching on nationalism, but not doing anything to condemn Chacko.
Yasin Malik is a Kashmiri separatist leader who is currently in custody for the alleged murder of four Kashmiri pandits and a foreign journalist.
Amethi will go to polls in the next and the fifth phase of the ongoing 17th Lok Sabha elections. The seat has been a Congress stronghold, and has been represented by three other members of the Gandhi family, apart from Rahul. Counting of votes will take place on May 23.
