Rahul Gandhi is the most recent candidate to have his name added to the list of politicians who violated the Model Code of Conduct by the Election Commission, which has been in force since March 10, and will remain in effect till May 23.
At a rally in Madhya Pradesh, a week ago, the Congress President had said that the ruling Narendra Modi government has made a new law which allows “tribals to be shot at”, and their “land, jungle, water can be taken away”.
A report has been filed by two BJP workers, and the commission has issued a show-cause notice to Gandhi, which he has to respond to within 48 hours, failing which, action will be taken without reference to him.
The notice has been issued as per the rules of the provision by the EC which prohibits leaders from making “unverified allegations” against their political opponents.
