At a rally in Haryana, Congress President Rahul Gandhi stirred up the issue of the Rafale fighter jet deal again. The issue has been used by the Congress very frequently in the past to attack the BJP.
This came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swipe at Gandhi’s father, former Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated by the LTTE in 1991. Referring to the vacation taken by the Gandhi family to the Lakshadweep islands in 1987, Modi had said that not only was the aircraft carrier stationed at the island for the ten day vacation period, but also Navy personnel were “put on service of Rajiv Gandhi and his family”. Modi claimed that it was a “compromise of national security”.
Earlier, Modi had accused the former PM of being “Bhrashtachari No.1”, earning harsh criticism from opposition parties, including Gandhi’s children-Rahul Gandhi, and Congress General Secretary in charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
Rahul, at the rally in Sirsa, said that the PM could talk about his father as much as he wants, but he should “also talk about Rafale deal and what he has done to give two crore jobs to the youth of the country”.
The Congress President wondered why the Rafale contract was given to Reliance group chairman Anil Ambani, who is allegedly a close aide of Modi. Gandhi went on to say that the billionaire industrialist “has never made an aeroplane in his life”.
All ten parliamentary constituencies of Haryana will go to polls on May 12, in the sixth phase of the ongoing 17th Lok Sabha elections. Counting of votes will take place on May 23.
