Gandhi Lok Sabha Elections
Congress President Rahul Gandhi filed his nomination for the Amethi Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh today. Gandhi has been winning three consecutive elections from the seat since 2004. Prior to him, 3 other members of his family- his mother Sonia Gandhi, father Rajiv Gandhi, and uncle Sanjay Gandhi- have contested from the seat and consequently represented it in the Lower House.

Gandhi will be facing BJP leader and Textiles Minister, Smriti Irani, for the second time in these elections. Irani was defeated by a margin of over one lakh votes in the 2014 elections.

Gandhi has already filed his nomination from another seat- Wayanad- in Kerala, which is being perceived by BJP leaders as him “running away”, due to not being confident of his prospects in Amethi.

Gandhi was accompanied by 5 people- his sister Priyanka Gandhi, who is the Congress in-charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh, mother Sonia Gandhi who is the UPA chairperson and is contesting from her stronghold Rae Bareilly, brother-in-law Robert Vadra, who is involved in a land scam case, and his nephew and niece.

The Congress President led a three kilometre long road show with his family members from Munshiganj-Darpipur to Gauripur, before filing the nomination.
