Priyanka Chaturvedi, who had expressed disappointment a few days ago with the Congress leadership for reinstating 8 party members who had allegedly misbehaved with her earlier, resigned from her post as party spokesperson and Convenor Communication, and joined the Shiv Sena today.

Chaturvedi was reported as saying that “the way a woman was being treated in the party reflects how women are treated in the country”, and this was the primary reason for her quitting the party she had joined ten years ago. Chaturvedi announced her resignation by posting her resignation letter addressed to Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Twitter. She also removed the designation of “AICC Spokesperson” from her Twitter bio a few hours before she confirmed the resignation, giving rise to speculations.

The 40-year-old columnist also clarified that she had not resigned due to dissatisfaction over being denied a Lok Sabha ticket. There were rumours that she was expected a ticket from Mumbai, where she was born and has grown up in, or from Mathura, where her parents hail from, but she blatantly dismissed the rumours.

Later in the day, addressing a press conference with Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, Chaturvedi announced her decision to join the saffron party, claiming that she has “had a connect with the party from a young age”, due to her association with Maharashtra. On being asked by reporters, she denied having experienced any “change of heart” regarding the party.
