Congress senior leader and five-time MLA Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, has left the grand old party embarrassed, after he was seen campaigning for his son, Sujay, in the constituency of Ahmednagar, who has joined the BJP recently.
Patil was seen holding a public meeting for his son. Patil had initially approached the NCP, but was denied a ticket. As per reports, this could be linked to an age-old dispute between NCP leader Sharad Pawar, and Patil’s father and Union Finance Minister, the late Balasaheb Vikhe Patil.
After Sujay’s decision to contest under a BJP ticket was announced, the media and politicians across were in a frenzy, expecting the father to also leave the Congress, which he has been a part of for around three decades. However, the former state Education Minister dismissed these rumours and said he was “very much with the Congress”.
When asked by reporters about his campaigning in Ahmednagar, the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly said that he has informed senior Congress leaders, and is conducting the meetings as a father, not as a politician.
Ahmednagar will go to polls on April 23, in the third phase of the elections.
