Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav, in a tweet on Thursday, said that the BJP has now been labelled “Bhagti Janata Party”, instead of “Bharatiya Janata Party”, by the citizens.
On Wednesday, BJP workers dismissed reports that PM Modi will hold a press conference in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, which he represents in the Lower House, ahead of his roadshow in the area, followed by filing of nomination papers for the ongoing 17th Lok Sabha elections. A letter which was being circulated claimed that the PM will hold a press conference, but party members claimed it was false.
Following these reports, Yadav, a former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, attacked Modi, saying that, “The people have heard that the BJP's new name is 'Bhagti Janata Party' because the Prime Minister avoids to hold a press conference while his leaders run away from the questions of the media journalists and their workers run away after seeing the people as they question them about the Rs 15 lakh and employment”.
Varanasi will witness polling in the last phase of the elections, on May 19. Modi, who won the 2014 elections by a landslide majority, will be pitted against Ajay Rai of the Congress, and Shalini Yadav from the SP-BSP alliance. Counting of votes will take place on May 23.
