Mahajan, Lok Sabha Elections
Eight-time Lok Sabha member, BJP veteran and incumbent Lok Sabha speaker, Sumitra Mahajan, has been added to the list of BJP veterans whose names have not been fielded from any constituency for the upcoming general elections.

In a statement issued on April 5, Mahajan wondered why the party was not deciding the name of the candidate they wish to field from Indore, and thus took it upon herself to not contest the Lok Sabha elections, so as to facilitate the party in taking a “decision with free heart, without any hesitation”.

According to reports, the BJP was in a predicament regarding the contesting of candidates above the age-bar of 75, resulting in them not fielding veterans such as LK Advani and Murli Manohar joshi either. Mahajan turns 76 on April 12.

The former BJP National Secretary also added that she has never sought any seats, or any tickets, not in 1989 when she fought for the first time, nor any time later. It was always the “party’s decision”.

The former Union Minister has been contesting every Lok Sabha election since 1989 from Indore, and has never lost. She is the longest-serving female member of the Lower House, and the second woman speaker of the House.
