Bollywood actor Sunny Deol, who has been fielded as the BJP candidate from the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha constituency of Punjab, said that he does not “know much about issues like Balakot strikes or India’s relations with Pakistan”.
After terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammad had been responsible for blowing up an army van in the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir, where 40 CRPF soldiers lost their lives, India had retaliated by conducting an IAF air strike at a JeM training camp in Balakot in Pakistan.
While speaking to reporters, Deol, son of popular actor and former MP Dharmendra, lauded the PM for doing a “great job”, and wishes that he “continues the good work” of “keeping the nation together and taking it forward”.
When asked why he chose to join the saffron party, the actor replied that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been an integral factor in this decision, as he believes Modi has “taken the nation forward, and it has progressed”. He also said that the government has “increased India’s global prestige”.
The Gurdaspur constituency is currently held by Congress leader Sunil Jakhar, who won the seat in by-polls held in 2017, after the death of then MP and former actor Vinod Khanna. Deol will face Jakhar in the polls on May 19, in the last phase of the ongoing 17th Lok Sabha elections. Counting of votes will take place on May 23.
